Skydance Partners With Netflix For New Terminator Anime Series

Well, it seems the horse isn’t dead after all folks, as Skydance (the studio behind Terminator Genisys and Dark Fate) is attempting once more to claw victory from the jaws of defeat, following the financial failure of the last two movies in the legendary science fiction franchise – which industry insiders, and financial experts alike, referred to as:

“Box office analysts say the movie’s poor opening is a reflection of complete IP failure. (Insiders at Paramount and Skydance don’t disagree.)”

    THR

Many Terminator Fans believed that the franchise had finally given up the ghost following the lackluster performance of the sixth movie; which had been intended as the beginning of yet another trilogy attempt, but now it appears that Skydance have managed to persuade streaming giant, Netflix, into giving the franchise an animated overhaul via Japanese Anime studio Production I.G.

    Variety states:

“As the project is still in the early stages, plot details are being kept under wraps. Netflix has partnered with Skydance on the series, with Skydance having produced the last two ‘Terminator’ films. The series is produced in partnership with Production I.G , who Netflix has had a production line deal with since 2018. Production I.G’s past anime credits include ‘Ghost in the Shell,’ ‘B: The Beginning,’ and ‘Eden of the East.'”

    Variety

The CEO of Production I.G stated that:

“I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning the ‘Terminator’ into an animated series. His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get onboard. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”

Mitsuhisa Ishikawa CEO of Production I.G

Netflix’s vice president of Japan and anime, John Derderian, said:

“The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

    John Derderian told Variety

The showrunner for the new series is Mattson Tomlin, Tomlin worked on the screenplay for the upcoming movie – “The Batman”.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart, I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach ‘Terminator’ in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”

    Mattson Tomlin

Could the new series wipe the slate clean and start again with new characters? Will it reinstate beloved characters or feature the future war in all its glory?
Do the studios plan to continue the Terminator: Dark Fate storyline in anime form in an attempt to circumvent the termination of the Skydance and Paramount trilogy?

Is this what the Terminator franchise always needed – a brand new visual approach to the untold, and untapped, resources of the Terminator mythos, or, is this just a case of David Ellison desperately trying to convince his investors that one outta three ain’t bad?

Are you excited to see the animated Terminator series?

Well… it’s better than nothing, I guess. I’m hoping that the series focuses on the future war and doesn’t even try the ‘Send a terminator back in time to protect someone in the present from an even MORE advanced terminator.’ story that’s been done to death.

There is one thing that gives me hope, though: the biggest advantage of animation is that you can bring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lina Hamilton, and Edward Furlong back to reprise their characters without worrying about their age or them needing to do lots of training to get into physical shape. If the series brings them back and tells a story that ends the Terminator saga for good, the series may yet be redeemed.

Linda Hamilton has said she has finished with the franchise after the backlash and the script issues with Dark Fate, at this stage of his career Edward Furlong would jump over the opportunity of getting another paycheck with no questions asked: he would sign even if the script was written by Satan himself, and I pray to God for having Schwarzenegger out of this. No offense, but in the last movies it was like watching the bloated and exploited Elvis of his Las Vegas phase trying to relive his glory days. Seeing him as a draperies seller in Dark Fate was absolutely emabarrassing.

When I saw these two fan made videos I started to think that maybe an adult animated film/show could be the way to go?
But sadly, I’m getting used to be disappointed 🙁

If it’s a Reboot set in a post-Judgement Day blue future with laser guns and horror and the story is another attempt at telling Marcus Wright’s story, then I can get behind this. They don’t need to continue the story or reboot established characters. They just need to make a new story with new characters using the setting and world JC created. And having Marcus be the main character without John or Kyle or anyone else would be a new story, despite the fact Salvation created the character back in 2009. They just gotta get it right this time.

It’s like David Ellison was masochist, or maybe he likes losing money.

Me gusta la idea, si usan a los personajes miticos como arnold o linda hamilton estaria bueno que usen sus voces originales!

      Some thoughts on Terminator 7:
      1) To make a really serious film about the Terminator, you need to gather a group of people and place them in an abandoned city, where they will experience quite certain inconveniences, malnutrition, dirt, and so on.
      2) I have serious doubts about the possibility of simulating smooth and fast human movements on a hydraulic system. Hydraulics certainly looks impressive, but scientifically, it’s an old technology. Artificial muscles capable of regeneration, polyalloy that mimics the properties of bones – that’s what you need.

Artificial muscles are not as resistant to combat as the combination of hydraulics and titanium alloy. In addition, after the nuclear war, the conditions are completely different than today – both for production and in the conditions for maintaining functionality.

Now just make together Zack Snyder, do it to Zack Snyder’s Terminator Genisys and Dark Fate, because Genysis and Dark Fate, two worst.

Been following this guy mattson on his socials for a while now and I gotta say I have serious doubts about the anime. He’s proud of being WOKE. You guys should read the script that got him the batman gig. Kill the leopard. Dumb and WOKE. just look at this dumbass, he even got a tat to prove he’s AWAKE. LMFAO. The Anime’s gonna be some stupid virtue signalling crap that has nothing to do with what us fans really want.
