Terminator Salvation: McG Ready to Release R Rated Cut

Terminator Salvation director, McG, is still ready to unleash a true Director’s Cut for the fourth installment in the Terminator franchise, which he says is darker than the previously released versions.

While promoting his new movie The Babysitter: Killer Queen, McG told CBR that:

It’s interesting because I feel like we did so much right with Terminator but, ultimately, got just enough wrong that we got beat up a little bit by the fanbase, and it really, really broke my heart. And now, strangely, I think the film has started to age better. And there is a different cut; I have my own cut of that film and there’s people online that talk about wanting to see that cut. And that’s interesting!

But I think I got a lot of things right with that. Obviously, I think [uncredited screenwriter] Jonah Nolan is a very, very serious writer and he did the best he could. And Christian [Bale] is maybe the most talented actor working today and Sam [Worthington] did a really good job also. I think I’ve got to take the punch on that one for not quite nailing the landing on the final expression of that movie, and who knows, maybe the cut that I have of that movie hidden away is the answer. It’s darker! [Laughs] I don’t know, that’s for the fans to say.

    McG told CBR

We know that Terminator Salvation had the best intentions and began life as a Rated R movie which is, funnily enough, the reverse of Terminator: Dark Fate which began life as a PG-13 movie and switched to Rated R with reshoots and CGI later down the line.

Following the release of Dark Fate there have been a number of fans expressing interest in continuing the Terminator Salvation timeline again, but as always, the fanbase is fractured and the same could be said for all the movies which failed to spawn their intended / planned sequels / trilogies (Salvation, Genisys and Dark Fate).

Terminator Salvation took a number of missteps but it had potential, and has been applauded by many fans for attempting to move the franchise in a different direction.

If Warner Brothers and Sony want to team up with McG to give us a new home release – we would definitely check it out, and we hope it would elevate the movie, as we have no qualms with saying the original Director’s Cut for Terminator Salvation was extremely underwhelming, as it only added mere minutes of footage that honestly didn’t really bring anything new.

Like many fans, we have always called for Director’s Cuts to T3 and Salvation (to help heal any disappointment) but the studios were previously never interested, but now, due to the pandemic, studios are reevaluating alternate cuts as an alternative revenue stream – so maybe now is the right time for this to happen.

We doubt #ReleasetheMcGCut will reach the dizzying heights of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut but a “Project Angel” home release edition would be very welcome.

That would be interesting and fascinating to watch. As long as the effects, the colors, the models of the different robots can be well appreciated. The scenes are better colored. To give an example: In Argentina, people still love the Zorro chapters by Guy Williams in color, the same with the episodes of The Three Stooges.

I would definitely be interested to see this cut. I think we the fans deserve it after the mess that is Dark Fate.

I guess it’s better than nothing, but I doubt an R-rated cut will change how I feel about Salvation, especially knowing how McG and co originally wanted it to end. One possible future, I guess. It would at least make SkyNet and its Terminators more threatening, and any Terminator film should be R-rated. So maybe it’s a step in the right direction … unless that direction is “Salvation 2”. I don’t see that working out.

I’d love to see that. I enjoyed Salvation a lot, but it lacked a bit of the brutality. The story tells about it, but we see too little of it. We’ve seen quite a lot alternate battle damage footage (screen shots) that was more realistic and more bloody than the final shots used.

I’d be happy to have that version of Salvation in my collection.

By the way I’ve always disliked that all the nude scenes with Kristanna Loken are heavily censored in the theatrical version via picture crop.

I think they were making several different movies and didn’t know how to tie it all together.

They were making a John Connor movie, a Marcus Wright movie, a Kyle and Star movie and a Project Angel movie.

In the end, they realized they were deep in a mess of character and narrative. The Marcus movie won out and what we got was pieces of everything else.

I think McG’s cut is probably most associated with the Project Angel stuff. The evil Hybrids were originally supposed to be the antagonists of the film. With them gone, there was a deficit in the narrative because Skynet itself is an abstract villain.

Yeah, we got a tiny shred of the hybrid antagonists in that one scene where you see four silhouettes watching over the human camp. I’d love to see more of that storyline.

I’d be down. I already love Terminator Salvation for what it is but this’d be a great addition and hopefully a little rejuvenation to the franchise

I would very interest in the R-rated Cut, I’m just curious whats to offer just some more blood and shots of John Conner being thrown or would this cut far differ from the theatrical cut with it having missing sub plots and more characters development added in.

I’m definitely seeing directors cuts of any of the Terminator movies that haven’t had them released yet. I’m very curious. Ultimately, I thought Salvation missed the mark, but had some interesting ideas and I’d buy a directors cut version just to see those ideas presented a bit differently. I also didn’t care for Genesys. Too much tell, not enough show. I loved Dark Fate.

I would love to see an extended version of Terminator Salvation. I’m a huge fan of this series, so the more the merrier. This new version might not be great, but I want to see the footage. I’m actually really excited to see what they filmed…

Salvation was in my opinion was the best sequel from T1/2. It wasn’t afraid of going in a new direction , away from time travel , and the chase mentality etc. Bale was the best JC since Furlong. Casting was spot on. Sam also plays a great role. I would love to see McG’s real vision of the film.
